Unique Movies for Halloween

By Piper Nicely

October is finally here, you guys! That means it’s time for pumpkins, Halloween costumes and best of all, scary movies! But everyone always seems to recommend the same old movies and it can get so boring to watch them over and over again. So, for your viewing pleasure, I have compiled a list of some of my favorite unique horror movies that you may not have heard about before. These movies range from silly to gory to downright terrifying so that you can satisfy every horror movie craving that you could ever have and celebrate spooky season all month long!

The Babadook (2014)

This movie is a unique art film that gained a cult following when it first came out five years ago. It follows the life of a single mother and her young son after he found a new picture book for her to read to him called Mister Babadook. The story tells about a monster called the Babadook who knocks three times before coming into children’s rooms at night. The son becomes convinced this monster is real and quickly odd and frightening things begin to happen around their house. They try to ignore it until the knocks on the door start coming, one…two…three…

It (1990)

Sure, we’ve all seen the movie It starring everyone’s favorite Stranger Things kid, Finn Wolfhard, but this is the original. This movie started as a mini series that was later compiled into a movie telling the story of a group of kids facing an evil clown named Pennywise living in their small town of Derry, Maine. The clown made them face their worst nightmares as children and then later brings them back together as adults when they return to fight Pennywise one last time.

Evil Dead (1981)

In the mood for something a little more silly? Try Evil Dead! This film follows a young couple as they spend the weekend in a cabin in the woods where they discover a book that accidentally summons up the forces of evil. Our hero, Ash, is then forced to fight his way out of a forest come to life, an unseen evil force, a sentient killer hand and his possessed girlfriend. Creative, goofy and absurdly gory, Evil Dead is the horror movie for you if you’re in the mood to laugh and scream. And if you like it, stay up all night and check out it’s sequel Army of Darkness!

Zombieland (2009)

Not in the mood for ghosts and demons? Do you want some gore, goofy one liners and to see Bill Murray fight the undead in a sensible sweater vest? Check out Zombieland! This movie tells the story of a college student trying to make his way through the zombie apocalypse by following a list of 30 comprehensive rules he has set for himself. Along the way, he makes a group of friends, including a man on a journey for a Twinkie and a pair of trickster sisters. Bloody, funny, and oddly touching, Zombieland is a great movie to watch with friends!

Sometimes, you don’t have the time to watch a good scary movie, whether you stayed out too late trick-or-treating or are cramming for a test the next day, so check out the tv show The Twilight Zone for just 25 minutes of spooky. Each episode is a short story about something unexplained or supernatural happening in a shadowy realm on earth called the Twilight Zone.

Some of my favorite extra scary episodes are:

“The Living Doll” tells the story of a baby doll named Talky Tina who learns to hold a grudge

– “Night Calls” in which an old woman receives haunting phone calls from beyond the grave,

-“Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” where a man is the only one who sees a gremlin on the wing of his airplane trying to sabotage the flight

-“The Dummy” in which a ventriloquist decides to get a new dummy, not realizing that his old one might not like that at all

I hope you enjoy some of these spooky flicks this season. Happy Halloween everyone!
