We’ve all heard about Brexit, or the British Exit, as the United Kingdom debates whether or not to leave the European Union. But now, there’s a new headline in town: “Megxit.” This name refers to the recent decision made by Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, to step back from their role as senior royals, become financially independent and get a home over in North America. However, this decision is met with outrage and has sparked what the English are calling a new “civil war”.

So what would Harry and Meghan benefit from leaving the life of posh royals? Meghan only recently married into the royal family and has expressed that the pressure placed on her has been taking its toll. She is often attacked in tabloids and newspapers with what Harry has called a “ruthless campaign” against his wife, one that he compared to his mother, the late Princess Diana faced after marrying into the family. Newspapers have often been rude, cruel or just blatantly racist to Meghan, once publishing a private letter she had written to her father without her consent.

The couple also want to give their new son, Archie, a more balanced life out of the spotlight and to split their time between North America and England, the respective homes of his mother and father.

However, the backlash that followed this announcement was intense. It was announced after the fact that they had not told Prince William, Harry’s brother, or even the Queen about their decision and they didn’t find out until it was later published on their Instagram.

The British people are also upset with Harry and Meghan as they believe that their decision to leave and become financially independent is a bit out of touch. The couple’s wedding, home and multiple trips and vacations were mostly financed by British taxpayers, who have played up to $3 million for the celebration. After giving all that money, citizens wondered why they had to if the pair did not even want the money in the long run.

Despite all the backlash, the decision is ultimately up to the royal couple. The choice to step down from the royal family is not an easy one and was surely made more difficult by constant assault by the media when it came to their private life. The desire to give their son a normal, balanced life is a common decision made by many other celebrities around the world for the wellbeing of the child. So while Megxit may be the new latest TV drama, it might just be the best decision possible for the royal couple and their son.
