Quarantine Coffee: A whipped version of our favorite morning beverage

By Sara ElSayed

Want a fun way to spice up your caffeine addiction? Would you like to try something new in this new era of repetitive days and social isolation? As always, the internet is filled with new ideas, recipes, and life hacks. During this time of “social distancing” and “self-quarantining” in an effort to keep ourselves and others safe, we’ve been struggling to find new things to do to kill time. To combat the increasing boredom, social media has been spitting out new recipes of sweets and drinks that you can make easily with ingredients you probably have in your home.

Thus, comes the new caffeine-filled trend that is taking the internet by storm: Quarantine Coffee. Or, more specifically, whipped coffee. After seeing numerous posts about this drink on Instagram, then receiving  the recipe on Tik Tok from my sister, it was almost impossible to avoid making this aesthetic beverage. It was time to put this photogenic coffee to the test, and see if it was really all that good.

To make the drink, it’s quite simple. The entire thing is a 1:1 ratio of ingredients, so if you plan on making more than one serving, just add one more of everything! All you have to do is add one tablespoon of instant coffee, sugar, and hot water (yes, it has to be hot) in a bowl. Next, you whisk for what seems like an eternity, until the mixture turns a light brown color and stands up with stiff peaks. Or, if you don’t want to stir for that long, and spare yourself a sore arm, use a handheld mixer with the whisk attachment, which will save you a lot of time. To serve, pour a glass of milk with ice and add the coffee on top to make homemade whipped iced coffee.

After spending half a lifetime stirring the coffee, I was excited to try it but was a little surprised at the taste. By itself, despite the amount of milk in the cup, the drink is quite bitter. Unless that’s the way you like it, you may want to add some sugar to sweeten the drink. After making the coffee, and drinking it, it’s understandable why so many people latched onto this new way to make the drink at their home, now that purchasing the beverage from other places is not the safest choice someone could make. The Quarantine coffee tasted amazing and was a fun recipe to tackle with my siblings, who all took turns stirring the mixture as we eagerly anticipated our caffeinated award.

So if you want to get your usual caffeine fix in a new way, or if you want to fix your skewed sleeping schedule, Quarantine Coffee is here to save the day!
