It seems like the coronavirus pandemic has almost everything away from us. Without sports or social gatherings and school closing, people around the country have tried to find ways to keep themselves entertained. It seems as if one of the only things that hasn’t been taken away is music. People have turned to social media outlets such as Tik Tok, Twitter, and Instagram to dance to new songs, post challenges, and talk about new music. Even the biggest artist in the world is getting in on the fun. On April 2nd, Canadian singer/rapper Drake released what appear to be his lead single, titled “Toosie Slide.” The track is a solo appearance from Drake, in which he raps about being able to dance like Michael Jackson and confronting his enemies effortlessly over an OZ produced beat. OZ and Drake have collaborated frequently as of late as he produced Drake and Travis Scott’s number one smash “Sicko Mode” and Drake and Rick Ross’s reflective “Gold Roses” track. This song comes with a unique twist, as it was released with a simple dance to go along with the chorus. This song was originally previewed on professional dancer and influencer Toosie’s Instagram and Twitter accounts with a video of him doing the dance to the song. Drake raps “right foot up, left foot slide” in falsetto as Toosie dances. Despite the song getting mixed reviews on social media, it sat atop number one on the billboard hot 100 charts in its opening week. Some are speculating this is the lead single to Drake’s new album, which he’s been hinting at for quite some time. In the past month, he has taken to Instagram live to discuss his new album with hip hop moguls such as Diddy and Joe Budden. While multiple Drake songs presumed to be on the album have leaked online, Drake claims everything on the album is new and unreleased. Hopefully the two year awaited Drake album lives up to the hype, as I’m sure we could all use some new excitement in our lives as we get through this indefinite quarantine.
