“Spellbreak” Review

Arol Augsburger- Staff Writer

Ah yes, another month, another battle royale game to add the mix. Spellbreak is a battle royale game in the list with Fortnite, Apex Legends, and others. You and/or a squad fight to be the last ones standing in a shrinking arena. In order to win, you need to pick up gear that is scattered throughout the map. What sets Spellbreak apart is that instead of guns there are magic gauntlets and runes.

The gauntlets and runes are one of the best parts of the game. The first step before entering the lobby is selecting one gauntlet from the six different types available. This gauntlet will act as your protection when you enter the arena. . Once you are inside, you can pick up another type gauntlet after the game starts. Each gauntlet has two attacks: a basic attack and an ability with a cooldown. The gauntlet spells can combine together to create powerful combos ranging from a flaming tornado to a electrified toxic cloud. Each of these gauntlets work and feel different from each other which makes gameplay interesting. The gauntlet you pick at the start will also give you perks depending on how much you have used it. For example, the toxic gauntlet can unlock a perk that makes you immune to your own poison. These gauntlets while the main part of your arsenal are not the only thing you have at your disposal. Runes can be found around the map like gauntlets. These items give you extra abilities including  teleportation and temporary flight.  These added with the gauntlets creates a large amount of possible combinations.  Though Spellbreak is not fully released, I have yet to experience any bugs. The gameplay feels smooth and fun. The game, while enjoyable, still has some issues. My main issue with the game is the tutorial starts a story that is not furthered by the main game. There are also some quality of life things, like the fact it is super easy to accidentally drop into a different area than the rest of your squad. This could just be me, but I could not figure out the ping system and would often accidently ping something. Overall, though I had more fun than I was expecting when I tried it. With it being a free game I would recommend it to people as there is little harm in trying it.
