Rose From Blackpink’s Debut Solo Album “R” Analysis

The K-pop group, Blackpink, are full of four talented members, but Rosé recently released a solo debut album. Jennie, in the same group, had a solo debut song years ago and Lisa, another member of the group, does solo dancing videos. Viewing her co-workers in the industry expressing themselves, she wanted to get a taste for herself. The music video was full of different scenes that aligned well with the title track. Rosé’s album only consists of two songs and then includes their instrumentals. The idol quotes, “The two songs were naturally chosen (for the album). I didn’t think too much about it. It happened like fate.” As much hype as the album alone received, it must’ve been an astute decision. Observed by the fans, they infer she wanted to take things back to the basics and found her group’s songs to be more loud and exciting, so she wanted to take the quieter and softer approach. The star also purposely wrote the songs in English to best convey the messages she wanted to exhibit.

Beginning with the title track, “On the Ground,” the sounds of both the chorus and verses clash surprisingly well. The hook reminds me of Taylor Swift as she includes the guitar and the sweet soothing build up on the instrumental. Until the chorus hits the listeners in the face with the sudden change of EDM and Rosé high pitched vocals. The lyrics that stuck out to me, and I could be saying the same for the majority, “I worked my whole life, just to get high, just to realize, everything I need is on the ground.” Without finding the real meaning behind what she meant by those words, I believe she is saying that working hard to reach your goals and your dreams, that honestly seem so high from the start is amazing, but your true self is from the beginning. She may be saying this as to tell her fans that she may be successful doing what she loves and that is specifically music, she is still going to remember her past self and whole-heartedly accept that. I think most celebrities, especially in music, change overtime because of fame and money. They don’t seem to be the same person as they were before they lived the fabulous luxury life and I love that she decided to point that out and remind society that she is going to stay genuine and true to herself.

Sadly, the last song on the album is “Gone,” and doing just a tiny bit of research, Rosé actually recorded this song two years ago! She phrases how she liked the song after listening to it a lot and she hoped to share it with her fans as soon as possible. The song sums up to be about a relationship that she wanted to continue because she loved him, but the guy in the relationship already moved on and technically used her. She is expressing how she is numb and both her love and hate are gone for him. The instrumental always has the guitar playing the simple melody and personally knowing how Rosé trained, the guitar fits her really well. I think the song can be very relatable not only to the women in the relationship, but also guys as well. Anyone could go through that situation with someone that was their everything and I love that the idol decided to release this song to finish her solo album.
